Greenbrier State Park, PATC Map 5 Long hike: 9.2 mi., 2600 ft. ascent, 2300 ft. descent. Short hike: 7.2 mi., 2100 ft. ascent, 1800 ft. descent. This sojourn along South Mountain starts at Turners Gap, we'll troop north on the Appalachian Trail through Washington Monument State Park (site of the other Washington Monument) for 4 ½ miles, then take a side trail into Greenbrier State Park. There long hikers make a clockwise outer loop around the park on various trails before ending at the Visitors’ Center. Short hikers bisect the loop on a trail through the middle of the park.

. A 7.8 mi circuit, 1700 ft. ascent and descent. If you haven’t climbed this closest mountain to Washington—strikingly visible from I-270 South of Frederick—here’s your chance. If you have climbed it, you’ll thrill to doing it again. Our circuit from the settlement of Stronghold climbs to the summit rocks and follows the ridge over Northern Peaks and White Rocks, all of which offer splendid panoramas of the Potomac River, the Virginia piedmont, and the distant Appalachians.

Long hike: 13 mi. Short hike: 8.2 mi. New trail! Hike on the recently opened Greenway Trail in nearby Seneca Creek State Park. Starting at Rileys Lock on the C&O Canal Towpath, we’ll take the trail northward along Seneca Creek. The short hike goes far as Black Rock Mill, the leg-stretching long version all the way to the park’s Visitors’ Center.

Sunday, September 17, 2000, 10:30am, Point of Rocks, MD. Casual Hike along the scenic C&O Canal and the Potomac River. Meet at the Marc Railroad Station in Point of Rocks, MD. Bring plenty of water an snacks, if desired. Snacks may be purchased at local shops. Lunch afterwards. Time and distance to be determined by participants. Directions: Take Route 7 to Route 15 North. Take Route 15N approximately 12 miles and cross the Point of Rocks bridge. Immediately after crossing the bridge turn right onto Route 28 into the Village of Point of Rocks. Railroad Station and parking lot are about a quarter mile on the right.

Hiking in Catoctin Mountain National Park from Cunningham Falls. PATC Map 5. Long hike: 8.7 mile, 2000 ft. ascent, 2100 ft. descent. Short hike: 6.2 miles, 1350 ft. ascent, 1450 ft. descent. Starting at Cunningham Falls, one of Maryland’s scenic treasures, the hike continues with no fewer than four scenic overlooks -- Hog Rock, Blue Ridge Summit, Thurmont Vista, and Chimney Rock. After Thurmont Vista, short hikers will head directly to the Visitor Center, where they’ll enjoy a warming fire while the long hikers complete their hike via trails around Wolf and Chimney Rocks.
Hiking in Catoctin Mountain National Park. PATC Map 5.  An 11 mile moderate to strenuous hike to a whiskey still, Blue Ridge Vista, Hog Rock, and an old saw mill, and past the lake.
Hiking in Gambrill State Park. An easy to moderate 6 mile hike with views and one long uphill section.
Hiking in Gambrill State Park along the Catoctin Trail. A moderate to strenuous 12 mile hike with views and streams in this park west of Frederick.

Black Rock Cliffs, MD, Rating C. A 6.8 mile out and back hike on the Appalachian Trail from Myersville, Maryland to Black Rock Cliffs and Annapolis Rocks with inspiring views over the valley of Fredrick County. Elevation gain of about 800 feet.
Weverton Cliffs/AT, MD. Rating A. A twelve mile out and back hike along the Appalachian trail in Maryland from Compton Gap to Weverton Cliffs which offers a panoramic view over the Potomac River. We will stop at the new PATC Garvey shelter. Elevation change of about 800 feet.

Billy Goat Trail
, MD, Rating B. Two North Sections of Billy Goat Trail, A 10 mile circuit hike on the Maryland side of the Potomac River. Lots of rock scrambling. Spectacular views of Great Falls and Mather Gorge. Bring a snack and water for a break along the way.
Carderock/Great Falls, MD, Rating C. Eight fast paced (4 mi/hr) miles to Great Falls MD and back.

Mason-Dixon Trail | PATC Trail Map | Point to Point Distance Calculator | Unknown to many, this long-distance trail route cover some 190 miles traveling from the Appalachian Trail south of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, dipping into Maryland, wandering over to Delaware, and finally terminating at Chadd's Ford in Pennsylvania, where it connects with the Brandywine Trail. • Broad Creek North to Susquehanna Hall Road | Link for description of hike | • Mason-Dixon Trail Map 6. Long hike: 12.4 mi., 1750 ft. ascent, 2000 ft. descent. Short hike: 7.5 mi., 1450 ft. ascent, 1700 ft. descent. The broad, Susquehanna River—and one of the area’s greatest populations of bald eagles and hawks--is our destination. From Rt. 623 just south of the Pennsylvania line, we’ll hike the Mason-Dixon Trail southbound along the woodsy west side of the river. After a stop for lunch at Glen Cove, the hikers will continue southbound along the river. Short hikers stop at Shures Landing Road, just below Conowingo Dam. Long hikers continue along the river to Rock Run Grist Mill in Susquehanna State Park.
