The Manassas Industrial School/Jennie Dean
Memorial is part of the Manassas Museum System which is owned and operated
by the City of Manassas. This Memorial commemorates Jennie Dean and the
school she founded in 1893, the Manassas Industrial School for Colored
Youth. It was the only school in Northern Virginia at that time that
provided vocational and academic training for African American children.
The school had the support of such notable individuals as Clara Barton and
Frederick Douglass (who gave the dedication speech in 1894). The school
existed as a private institution until 1938 when it became a public
regional high school for blacks operated by Fairfax, Prince William and
Fauquier counties. It later became a Prince William County high school.
The original structures were razed in the late 1960's and early 1970's
The Memorial is open to the public from dawn to dusk each day. A bronze model of the campus, outlines of the foundations of original buildings, historical markers and an information kiosk tell the rich history of this school.
