As the Civil War began, the armies of the North and the South met for the first time north of Manassas. Union forces lead by General MacDowell confronted the Confederate defenders at the bridge at Bull Run Creek. During the early morning of July 21, 1861, the Union troops crossed the creek at Catharpin (20143). The Confederates fought gallantly as they retreated to Henry Hill and waited for reinforcements. General Jackson and his troops emerged from the tree line behind the statue. With battlefield courage, Jackson stood firm "like a stonewall" and became the focal point of the Confederate rally and subsequent victory in the 1st Battle of Manassas. For info call 703-361-1339.
